Day 3 - What is actually going on??
Another day of drama only this one wasn't that weather related; I think!
So after being unable to post any blog updates for the first two days I thought I'd get up and head straight into Glenarm for breakfast and some blogging.
The sun started to shine around 0830 when I decided to get up. Which was pretty decent as I was getting rather pissed of with being wet!
So I'm in Glenarm and my phone is telling me 'No network operator'.
I'm thinking oh bugger, I know my two year phone contract is up in June but I thought I had another year to go!! 🤦
So back to the shop for a second time to see if they sell sim cards? They do and I purchase one (when I remembered who I was with!!) and a £10 top up.
Sitting on the bench beside the river at the mouth of the sea with my rucksac emptied around me trying to dry everything out; I try to change my sim over and top up money onto the card.
It's still not working! 😩 Why? Still no network operator!! I trundle back to the shop for a third time and explain what's happened to the nice girl who lets me use her phone. My parents are bringing Ethan up to see me today so I plan were to meet them and hopefully we can sort the phone situation out.
I pack my semi dry stuff away in my rucksack again and get cracking. A couple of km down the road my phone pings and says welcome to '3'. However it still won't let me call out to top the dam thing up so I still can't call anybody!!
A couple of km later and by this time it's 1300 or so, I finally get a signal and top up the card after which I called my parents to arrange a closer meet for lunch.
This consisted of a picnic by the sea after which Ethan and I walked down by the rocks and messed about for a bit.
I chance my arm here and change back to my old (contract) SIM which believe it or not works!! What is going on??!
I reckon the Gales of the previous night knocked out some of the local masts and not knowing this I think my contract has expired 😣.
Them when I get further away from the downed mast and pickup onto a working mast everything is up and running again!!
Or at least that's what I'm figuring!! Who actually knows?
Saying goodbye to my parents and Ethan about 1500 I ploughed on to make good time through Waterfoot and Cushendall before ending up where I currently reside just outside Cushendun.
Between Cushendall and Dun I took a lovely little windy seaside track up the side of a hill before coming out onto the main road again and speaking to a lovely man for around 10min who was out gardening.
I've been passing plenty of cafes on my travels and can't wait till they are open again so I can replenish my energy reserves and also my phone battery 😁.
Stats today are 31.6km walked with an accent of 723m. I reckon I'll make Ballycastle tomorrow, just hope the wind dies of a bit as it was up and down today.
I'll be posting pictures of my adventures on Instagram and the blog updates will appear on the Walk4Ameila Facebook site straight away if you don't want to wait until the daily 0800 email if you have signed up.
